Articulation and Coarticulation in the Lower Vocal Tract

چکیده

This proposal is aimed at understanding the strategies that are used to control articulators during speech and at clarifying the relationships between phonological features and articulatory motions. This experimental project involves the collection and analysis of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and acoustic speech data, combined with numerical modelling of articulatory motions. Movements of the tongue root and velum are very important in speech production. The velum position effectively defines nasal consonants; the advancement or retraction of the tongue root determines the volume of the pharynx, the largest cavity of the vocal tract. However, the back half of the vocal cavity has had relatively little attention. Access is difficult, and subjects do not tolerate many experimental techniques that work well for the front of the vocal cavity.

Assessing Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measurements Effects of Sustenation, Gravitation, and Coarticulation

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is well suited for studying the three-dimensional (3-D) shape of the vocal tract and tongue. However, when MRI is used for speech production measurements, it does not measure normal speech, as the subject lies in supine position and often has to sustain the articulation artificially due to very long acquisition times. In this chapter, MRI is used to estimate the...

Vocal Tract Model Adaptation Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

We present the adaptation of the anatomy and articulation of a 3D vocal tract model to a new speaker using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We combined two MRI corpora of the speaker: A corpus of volumetric images of sustained phonemes and a corpus with midsagittal image sequences of dynamic utterances. The volumetric MRI corpus was used for the adaptation of vocalic and (neutral) consonantal ...

Modeling Consonant-Vowel Coarticulation for Articulatory Speech Synthesis

A central challenge for articulatory speech synthesis is the simulation of realistic articulatory movements, which is critical for the generation of highly natural and intelligible speech. This includes modeling coarticulation, i.e., the context-dependent variation of the articulatory and acoustic realization of phonemes, especially of consonants. Here we propose a method to simulate the contex...

A Generative Modeling Framework for Structured Hidden Speech Dynamics

We outline a structured speech model, as a special and perhaps extreme form of probabilistic generative modeling. The model is equipped with long-contextual-span capabilities that are missing in the HMM approach. Compact (and physically meaningful) parameterization of the model is made possible by the continuity constraint in the hidden vocal tract resonance (VTR) domain. The target-directed VT...

Coarticulation and articulatory compensations studied by dynamic MRI

This paper presents an ultra fast implementation of Turbo Spin Echo (TSE) to achieve continuous monitoring of the vocal tract with an actual time resolution of 4 images per second. We present preliminary results of two experiments involving coarticulation and articulatory compensations.
